Tata Electronics has acquired a 60% controlling stake in Pegatron’s Indian arm, a key assembly partner for Apple, as the conglomerate strengthens its iPhone manufacturing presence in India. Pegatron, based in Taiwan, operates an iPhone production facility in Tamil Nadu, near Chennai, and the deal comes less than a year after Tata Electronics acquired the Indian operations of another smartphone assembly company, Wistron.
Although Tata and Pegatron have not disclosed the financial terms of the deal, Tata emphasized that the acquisition aligns with its strategy to expand its manufacturing footprint in India. The move marks a significant step as Tata aims to grow its presence in the country’s tech and manufacturing sectors, particularly in the context of Apple’s broader efforts to diversify its production outside of China.
Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We look forward to a new era of AI, digital, and technology-led manufacturing as we bring up these new facilities and expand our operations in India.”
Tata, which began assembling iPhones in India only last year, is quickly becoming one of Apple’s most important partners in the region. This acquisition further cements Tata’s role as a major player in Apple’s shift to diversify its supply chain and manufacturing operations in Asia, as the tech giant looks to reduce its reliance on China amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
