AI-powered image generators are at the center of multiple copyright lawsuits, with many companies relying on publicly available data for training. Most argue that fair use laws protect these practices, but copyright holders often disagree.

In response, some startups are taking a different approach by training AI models exclusively on licensed content. One such company is Bria, a New York and Tel Aviv-based firm founded in 2023 by Yair Adato and Assa Eldar. Bria collaborates with around 20 partners, including Getty Images, to license images for AI training while ensuring proper compensation for creators. CEO Yair Adato explains that Bria’s system programmatically rewards image owners based on their overall influence.

Bria’s models, trained on one billion visuals and millions of videos, aim to mitigate biases common in AI-generated content. By using globally representative datasets, the company produces diverse visuals suited for various creative applications.

Bria provides plug-ins for design tools like Photoshop and Figma, along with a fine-tuning API that enables customers to customize AI models. Clients can run Bria’s models on its platform or external cloud environments while maintaining ownership of their data and outputs. Enterprise customers also have the option to purchase access to source code and models.

Looking ahead, Bria plans to build an “IP ecosystem” where businesses can license media for commercial use with built-in compliance. The company also intends to expand into generating music, video, text, and on-device AI applications.

On Thursday, Bria announced a $40 million Series B funding round, bringing its total raised to $65 million. The funds will support product development, team expansion, and continued growth. With 40 customers and annual recurring revenue growth exceeding 400% last year, Bria expects to double its team by year’s end.
