Amazon Echo uploads all voice recordings to the cloud.

Amazon Echo users will soon lose the option to process Alexa requests locally, meaning all voice recordings will be sent to the company’s cloud.

According to Ars Technica, Amazon informed customers via email on Friday that it would discontinue the “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” option on Echo smart speakers and displays starting March 28. This feature previously allowed users to prevent their voice recordings from being stored in the cloud.

In the email, Amazon explained that the decision stems from its focus on expanding Alexa’s capabilities using generative AI, which relies on the computing power of Amazon’s secure cloud. “As we continue to expand Alexa’s capabilities with generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon’s secure cloud, we have decided to no longer support this feature,” the message stated.

The change coincides with Amazon’s launch of a new version of its AI-powered voice assistant, now branded as Alexa+. The update aims to enhance Alexa’s intelligence and functionality, but it also raises concerns about user privacy and data security.

Privacy advocates and regulators have previously expressed concerns over Amazon’s handling of voice data. In 2023, the company agreed to a $25 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over allegations that it improperly retained children’s voice recordings. This latest move to shift all Alexa requests to the cloud may further intensify scrutiny from consumers and regulators alike.

As AI assistants become more advanced, the balance between innovation and user privacy remains a critical issue. With Amazon prioritizing cloud-based AI processing, users who valued the local processing option may need to reassess their privacy settings and expectations regarding voice data security.
