Amazon has formed a new AI group within AWS focused on developing AI agents—systems designed to help automate tasks in both consumer and enterprise applications, according to a Reuters report on Tuesday.
In an internal email seen by Reuters, AWS CEO Matt Garman described agentic AI as a potential “multi-billion-dollar business” for AWS. He emphasized the transformative potential of AI agents in streamlining daily tasks and enterprise operations. Swami Sivasubramanian, a longtime AWS executive who previously led the company’s AI and data teams, will reportedly oversee this new initiative.
With this move, Amazon joins the growing industry shift toward AI-powered agents, competing with companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. These AI-driven systems are designed to perform complex tasks independently, reducing the need for manual input.
Amazon has already started integrating agentic AI into its products. Last week, the company unveiled new capabilities coming to Alexa+, an upgraded version of its voice assistant. Demonstrations showed Alexa+ autonomously booking rides, navigating websites, and executing tasks that users typically handle themselves. These upgrades highlight Amazon’s vision of making Alexa a more proactive assistant rather than just a voice-controlled tool.
Beyond consumer applications, AWS is also exploring AI agents for business use. Competing with industry leaders such as Salesforce and Microsoft, Amazon aims to develop AI systems that automate enterprise workflows, enhance productivity, and optimize business processes.
