Amazon is rolling out a series of accessibility improvements for Fire TV, including Dual Audio, expanded hearing aid support, and tactile QR codes. The Dual Audio feature, launching in the coming weeks, will allow users with hearing aids to listen to audio through their devices while others in the room hear the standard sound from the TV speakers. Initially available on the Fire TV Omni Mini LED, Dual Audio utilizes the audio streaming for hearing aids (ASHA) protocol.
This feature marks the first time that Fire TV users with ASHA-enabled hearing aids can enjoy streaming content simultaneously with others using two different audio outputs, creating a more inclusive viewing experience. Amazon is also expanding ASHA compatibility to include all Widex Moment Behind-The-Ear (BTE) and Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) hearing aids. This will work across multiple devices, including the Fire TV Omni Mini LED Series, Fire TV Omni QLED Series, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV 4-Series, Fire TV 2-Series, and Fire TV Omni Series.
In addition to audio updates, Amazon is improving the accessibility of its packaging and start guides. New tactile QR codes featuring raised UV dots will make it easier for people who are blind or have low vision to locate and scan the codes. These QR codes lead to Amazon.com, where users can access detailed product information and setup instructions.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Amazon is also introducing more eco-friendly packaging for its Echo, Kindle, and Fire TV products, using 30% more recycled fiber on average and 60% less ink.
