Apple is reportedly developing a smart doorbell system equipped with Face ID technology.

According to Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly developing a new smart doorbell system and lock system. The system would use Face ID technology to unlock doors for recognized residents. The face-scanning doorbell would integrate with a smart deadbolt, potentially utilizing existing HomeKit-compatible third-party locks. Alternatively, Apple might collaborate with a specific lock manufacturer to offer a complete system from the start.

The lock would function similarly to an iPhone, automatically unlocking the door when you or another authorized resident looks at it. Like other Apple devices with biometric login features, the system’s camera would utilize Apple’s Secure Enclave chip to securely store and process Face ID data separately from the rest of the hardware. The rumored doorbell camera is part of a larger wave of speculation about Apple’s renewed focus on smart home technology under the banner of Apple Intelligence.

This push reportedly includes a new smart home camera, a potential Apple-branded TV, and innovative smart home displays. One display is said to resemble an iPad that magnetically attaches to wall mounts or speaker bases, while another features a robotic arm connected to a larger base, allowing for dynamic positioning.

the doorbell-lock system isn’t expected to launch until late next year at the earliest, if at all currently in the early stages of development. If released, it would position Apple as a competitor to Amazon’s Ring and Google Nest in the smart home market. Gurman also noted that Apple is working on other smart home products, including an indoor security camera and a rumored smart home hub, which could debut as soon as next year.
