Bluesky is expanding its video capabilities. Following the introduction of a TikTok-like custom video feed last week, the social network announced on Monday that it is adding a new video tab to user profiles. This feature allows users to showcase videos they’ve uploaded, whether original content or from other platforms like TikTok.
The move aims to boost video content engagement on Bluesky and could provide an additional revenue stream for the platform, especially if it introduces premium features like longer or higher-quality videos as part of a subscription plan. However, some Bluesky users are hesitant about the increased focus on video, with a few asking if they can disable the video tab on their profiles. Others have suggested the platform prioritize features seen on X, such as an Edit button.
Despite mixed reactions, there is clear demand and developer interest in creating video-focused Bluesky apps. Several developers, including Sebastian Vogelsang with his Skeets and Flashes apps, are already building tools for a more video-centric experience. Even Mark Cuban has expressed interest in supporting a video app built on the AT Protocol, which powers Bluesky.
The new video tab feature was introduced in the Bluesky 1.97 update, which also includes a menu for blocking users, deleting conversations after reporting direct messages, and improvements to translations.
