Canon’s New App Enables Multi-Camera Live Streaming

Canon has launched a new live streaming app, Live Switcher Mobile, which allows users to wirelessly connect and switch between video feeds from up to three mobile devices. Currently, the app is compatible only with iPhones and iPads running iOS/iPadOS 16 or later, with no support for Android. Surprisingly, it also does not work with Canon’s own digital cameras yet, though this feature is planned for a future update, according to the company’s FAQ.

The app is free to download but comes with limitations: video quality is capped at 720p, outputs are watermarked, and ads occasionally appear in the interface (though not for viewers). Upgrading to a $17.99 monthly subscription removes watermarks and ads and increases video quality to 1080p, though there is no option for resolutions beyond HD.

One device serves as the host, managing the switching interface and acting as the primary camera. Up to two additional devices can provide alternate video angles or a live screen capture, such as for gaming. Switching can be done manually or set to occur automatically at intervals of 8–20 seconds.

The app supports features like picture-in-picture streaming, text and image overlays for branding or captions, and live streaming to platforms like YouTube and Facebook. While comments can be displayed within the app, this is limited to YouTube and Facebook.

Although Canon’s app lacks some of the advanced features of free alternatives like OBS Studio, it offers a simpler setup for beginners. Canon has also confirmed plans to support its digital cameras and hinted at possible 4K capabilities in the future, which could make the app’s $215+ annual cost more appealing for users seeking a portable and professional streaming solution.
