Nintendo Unveils First Details of Switch 2, Set for 2025 Release:
Nintendo shared the initial details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 in a video released Thursday. While the console is confirmed for release in 2025, a specific date has not been provided.
The Switch 2 maintains a similar design to the original but is larger. In the video, the Joy-Con controllers are black with colored accents and attach to the console’s sides instead of sliding on and off. Leaks suggest that the controllers might use magnets for easy attachment.
Nintendo Switch 2:
A new button beneath the home button on the right Joy-Con is also visible, which had been previously hinted at in leaks. The video shows the Joy-Cons potentially being used like a mouse, and the SL and SR buttons are now larger than on the original. Additionally, the top of the Switch 2 features a new USB-C port alongside the 3.5mm headphone jack. The kickstand is redesigned in the shape of a U, and the dock now has a more rounded shape. The console will also include a separate controller grip for attaching the Joy-Cons, similar to the original model.
The only game shown so far appears to be a new Mario Kart title, but the Switch 2 will be backward-compatible with physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, though not all games may be fully compatible.
Nintendo plans to reveal more information in a special Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event on April 2, 2025, with the exact time announced later. Fans will also have the opportunity to try out the new console at events in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas, with ticket registration opening on Nintendo’s website on January 17th at 3 PM ET.
CES 2025:
The original Nintendo Switch has been a massive success, blending a home console and handheld gaming experience into one. It’s become one of the best-selling consoles of all time, with 146.04 million units sold, trailing only the original Nintendo DS. Players can expect the new Switch 2 to support previous Switch titles and offer continued access to Nintendo Switch Online.
While waiting for a full Switch successor, there have been hardware refreshes, such as the Nintendo Switch Lite and the Switch OLED, which added features like a better display. Rumors about the next console started circulating in December, with accessory manufacturers sharing potential details. At CES 2025, a 3D-printed mockup of the Switch 2 was also revealed.
