Chrome may soon use AI to enhance online safety. Scams are becoming increasingly prevalent, making it more important than ever to stay alert, whether checking emails, browsing the web, or answering phone calls. Fortunately, Google is working on a solution to help protect users from falling victim to scams, at least while using Chrome. Researcher Leopeva64 recently discovered that Google is testing a new AI-powered scam detection feature in Chrome. Named “Client Side Detection Brand and Intent for Scam Detection,” the feature uses AI to identify suspicious websites.
Although the name doesn’t directly mention AI, the description indicates that it utilizes large language models (LLM), which power many AI-driven tools and services. The feature analyzes web pages on your device to detect two main things: the misrepresentation of brands (where scammers mimic legitimate brands to deceive users) and suspicious intent (looking for signs of scams and phishing attempts).
To explain the feature further, Leopeva64 consulted Gemini, which clarified that the LLM scans for brand misrepresentation and potential scam indicators. While AI responses should always be interpreted with caution, this explanation seems accurate. Google isn’t the only company utilizing AI for scam prevention in browsers. Recently, Leopeva64 also found a similar feature in Microsoft Edge, a “scareware blocker,” which clearly states, “Allow Microsoft to use AI to detect potential tech scams.”
