iOS 18.2 Launches Genmoji: Create Personalized Emoji Beyond Limits
In the iOS 18.2 update, released today, Apple introduces Genmoji, a groundbreaking feature that lets you design custom emoji tailored to exactly what you want to express. Whether it’s a break-dancing astronaut or a bagpipe-playing dog, Genmoji allows for creative possibilities far beyond standard Unicode emoji.
Unlike fixed Unicode characters, Genmoji are dynamically generated using on-device AI. They seamlessly integrate into text as inline emoji in supported apps like Messages and Notes. You can even create Genmoji inspired by people in your Photos app, making them uniquely personal and expressive.
Requirements and Availability
Genmoji is included in the iOS 18.2 update, released on December 11, 2024. The feature requires Apple Intelligence, which is exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 16 series models. However, Apple Intelligence is currently unavailable in the EU.
To access Apple Intelligence features like Genmoji, users must join a waitlist via Settings ➝ Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple will notify users when access is granted. Additionally, Apple Intelligence requires both your iPhone and Siri to be set to the same language. Supported languages for Apple Intelligence include English (US) and, as of iOS 18.2, English (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and UK).
Compatibility
Genmoji works best between devices running iOS 18.2, but they are also viewable on:
- Devices with iOS/iPadOS 18.1 and later
- Macs running macOS Sequoia 15.1 and later
On older Apple devices or Android phones, Genmoji appear as static images instead of inline emoji. For third-party apps to fully support Genmoji creation and display, developers will need to enable compatibility.
How to Create Genmoji in Messages

- Tap the emoji symbol on the bottom-left corner of the keyboard.

Limitations and Content Restrictions
Apple enforces content guidelines similar to its Image Playground feature to ensure creations remain appropriate. While standard emoji may feel limiting after experiencing Genmoji, Apple’s safeguards maintain a respectful user environment.
With Genmoji, Apple redefines personal expression in digital communication, making emoji as unique as your imagination.
