Meta is rolling out new updates to its Meta AI chatbot, enhancing its ability to “remember” details from conversations. The update, available on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp for iOS and Android in the U.S. and Canada, allows users to tell Meta AI to remember specific details about them, such as their love for travel or language learning.

This memory feature, similar to those in OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, helps Meta AI retain context from previous chats, such as a user’s dietary preferences. Users can delete these memories at any time, and the feature will not apply to group chats.

Another significant upgrade to Meta AI is its ability to use information from across Meta’s platforms to offer personalized recommendations. This could include data like a user’s home location on Facebook or recent Instagram activity.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted how this feature could help personalize user experiences, such as suggesting creative bedtime stories for his daughters based on their interests. However, the new personalized recommendations will be available only in the U.S. and Canada initially, and there will be no option to opt out, according to a Meta spokesperson.

Despite Meta’s efforts to frame these updates positively, concerns about privacy and trust could shape how users respond to the new data-driven features, especially given the company’s history with user data management.
