Oracle and Microsoft in Talks to Acquire TikTok

Oracle, along with a group of investors that includes Microsoft, is reportedly in discussions to take over TikTok. ByteDance would retain a minority stake in TikTok, while Oracle would take control of the app’s algorithm, data collection, and software updates. The White House is reportedly involved in negotiations, although President Trump has denied working directly with Oracle.

In a statement, Trump mentioned that many people are interested in TikTok but clarified he hadn’t spoken to Oracle specifically. Other potential buyers reportedly include Elon Musk, real estate mogul Frank McCourt, and Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary. Trump has also expressed support for Larry Ellison, Oracle’s co-founder, purchasing the platform.

Oracle’s existing role in supporting TikTok’s server network could position it to oversee operations more closely under the proposed deal, which aims to reduce Chinese ownership. Microsoft’s involvement is still unclear, although the company was previously part of a 2020 bid to acquire TikTok alongside Oracle and Walmart, with Bill Gates calling the offer “a poisoned chalice.” Walmart is not reportedly part of the current talks after stepping back due to concerns over the app’s valuation.

The news follows President Trump’s executive order extending a 75-day delay for enforcement actions requiring ByteDance to divest from TikTok, with the possibility of a US-controlled joint venture still on the table. Both Microsoft and Oracle have declined to comment.
