Reelo is an emerging app that aims to build a video-first platform for the open-source social network Bluesky, but it stands out by not building directly on Bluesky itself. Instead, it leverages the underlying AT Protocol, allowing it to offer more advanced features, such as longer video support, filters, effects, a music library, and plans for livestreaming.
While other video apps like Bluescreen, Videos for Bluesky, and Skylight are limited by Bluesky’s features, Reelo’s approach allows it to create a more robust experience. Bluesky was initially designed to compete with X (formerly Twitter) and lacks TikTok-like capabilities. In contrast, Reelo’s independence from Bluesky’s constraints allows it to focus on the key elements that make TikTok successful—music, effects, and engaging creator tools.
João Davi S. N., the developer behind Reelo, initially tested building a video app for Bluesky but found the limitations too restrictive. After abandoning the project, he chose to develop an app based on the AT Protocol, which allows for up to three-minute videos, compared to Bluesky’s one-minute limit.
Reelo features a vertical video feed with options for liking, commenting, and sharing, and it will run its own personal data server (PDS). It also offers cross-posting to Bluesky but with the flexibility to share longer videos via embeds.
Set to launch in March, Reelo plans to monetize through ads and subscriptions, with revenue potentially shared with creators. The app will offer a beta sign-up early this year.
