Reliance to Build World’s Largest AI Data Center in India, Report Says

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance is set to build what could become the world’s largest data center in Jamnagar, India, with a three-gigawatt capacity to meet rising AI demand.

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance is planning to build the world’s largest data center, with a multi-gigawatt facility set to be constructed in Jamnagar. According to Bloomberg, the proposed site would have a capacity of 3GW, with Reliance expected to invest between $20 billion and $30 billion in its development.

While details on the Jamnagar project remain limited, Reliance intends to power the data center entirely with renewable energy sourced from nearby solar, wind, and hydrogen projects currently in the works.

The new facility would surpass the current largest data center, Microsoft’s 600-megawatt site in Virginia, according to a Bloomberg report. The project is estimated to cost between $20 billion and $30 billion.

In 2020, Ambani raised over $25 billion from investors like Meta, Google, Silver Lake, General Atlantic, KKR, Mubadala, and PIF to fuel the growth of Reliance’s retail and telecom operations, making the company India’s most valuable.

Ambani plans to power the data center primarily with renewable energy sourced from a nearby green energy complex producing solar, wind, and hydrogen power.

The project also involves Reliance purchasing chips from Nvidia, with both companies having announced a partnership in October to develop AI infrastructure in India.

This comes as OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle recently pledged up to $500 billion to develop AI infrastructure in the U.S. through their Stargate Project.
