Telegram has launched its first update of the year, introducing several new features, including third-party account verification, enhanced message search filters, and the ability to convert gifts into NFTs.
Previously, Telegram had a verification program for public figures and organizations. Now, the platform allows third-party authorities, such as food-quality regulators or educational bodies, to verify accounts. Verified accounts from these third parties will display a new logo next to their names, replacing the traditional blue checkmark.
This decentralized verification system aims to reduce scams and combat misinformation, offering a proactive approach to security that Telegram believes sets a new standard for social platforms. To become verified, individuals or organizations must complete the verification process and apply for eligibility. Verified entities can use Telegram’s Bot API to assign or remove verification, similar to how organizations verify affiliated accounts on X. Verified accounts will feature the organization’s logo on their profile.
In addition, Telegram now enables users to turn gifts into NFTs, which can have custom backgrounds and icons. These gifts can be purchased using Telegram Stars, available through the app or via the Fragment site with a TON crypto wallet. Telegram users will be able to trade these NFTs on various platforms. To cover blockchain transaction costs, Telegram charges users for upgrading their gifts to collectibles.
Other updates include a new emoji reaction feature for service messages (like when someone joins a group) and enhanced search filters for private chats, group chats, and channels.
