The YouTube Kids app is getting a redesign that will make it look and function more like the standard YouTube app, with a major update allowing kids to browse videos in portrait mode for the first time. This change will be rolling out over the next few weeks on iOS and Android, while the web and smart TV versions will remain unchanged.
Since its launch nearly a decade ago, YouTube Kids hasn’t seen much of a visual update, with its last major redesign in 2017. This new overhaul brings a significant refresh, making the app appear less toy-like, with design elements inspired by recent updates to the main YouTube app. Key shortcuts like Home, Search, and Profile, which were once at the top, will now be placed in a new navigation bar at the bottom. A “Your Stuff” page will also be added to the bar, offering easy access to downloaded, shared, or previously watched content. Parental controls and other settings will remain in dedicated sections, with shortcuts for them still available in the upper right corner next to the Cast button.
