YouTube is strengthening its gambling content policies to protect users from potentially harmful material. With the rise of online gambling, many creators have been promoting betting platforms, often through sponsorships and affiliate deals. Now, YouTube is cracking down with stricter rules.
One of the biggest changes is a new age restriction. Under the updated policy, online gambling content will no longer be accessible to signed-out users or those under 18. However, YouTube is making exceptions for content related to online sports betting and in-person gambling, which will not be affected by this restriction.
Previously, YouTube had already prohibited the promotion of gambling websites or apps unless they were certified by Google, ensuring compliance with local laws. Now, the platform is expanding this rule even further. Creators are no longer allowed to direct viewers to gambling-related links, whether through URLs, embedded text, logos, or verbal references, unless the gambling platform is Google-certified.
Additionally, YouTube is cracking down on misleading gambling content. Any video that falsely promises “guaranteed returns” on gambling will be removed, even if the gambling platform being promoted is certified by Google. This move aims to prevent creators from misleading audiences with unrealistic claims.
The rise of online gambling has led to a surge in content from influencers looking to cash in on sponsorships. YouTube’s updated policies indicate a push for greater responsibility, ensuring both creators and the platform adhere to ethical promotion practices. These new rules go into effect on March 19. By implementing these stricter regulations, YouTube hopes to create a safer and more transparent environment for its users while reducing exposure to potentially harmful gambling content.
